🏛️ When Daniel First Beheld Babylon
After a long and weary way,
led by the victors day by day,
there rose upon the distant sky
Babylon’s mighty gateway high.
Its walls stretched vast and towered tall,
a wonder that amazed them all.
With mighty towers, firm and strong,
they drew the gaze of every throng.
Its streets were broad and stretched afar,
alive with merchants near and far.
From many lands the traders came,
with distant goods of every name.
Its temples glittered, rich and grand,
adorned with gold on every hand.
Both day and night the people praised
the gods their human power had raised.
Daniel beheld the city there,
majestic, royal, proud, and fair.
Yet deep within his faithful heart,
God still remained above all power.
Hananiah silently surveyed
the restless crowds through streets arrayed.
Mishael and Azariah saw
what human hands had built in awe.
A foreign world before them lay,
with unfamiliar paths and ways.
The language sounded strange and new,
unlike the speech they always knew.
The names of many foreign gods
were heard throughout the streets and courts.
What Judah once had counted holy
seemed here so distant and remote.
No temple stood on Zion’s height;
no sacred smoke rose into sight.
No priest pronounced the blessing there
as once at home in worship and prayer.
Perhaps this question filled their mind:
“What will tomorrow bring in time?
How can we still remain God’s own
within this world we have not known?”
The people all around them lived
by different thoughts and different ways.
So many things enticed the eye;
so much promised success and joy.
The city too was rich in learning,
in stars observed and scholars’ yearning.
Babylon proudly praised itself
and placed humanity above all else.
They glorified the monarch’s might
in every place, both day and night.
His name was honored far and wide,
as though the world were his to guide.
Yet Daniel knew within his soul
where true and lasting power belonged.
No human kingdom can endure
when God appoints another course.
The young men now were far away
from home, the temple—and from God?
No, only from their native land,
but never from His faithful hand.
For God is Lord in every place,
in Judah and in Babylon.
His watchful eye, forever true,
still guarded all His children too.
The days passed slowly, one by one,
while unfamiliar things would come.
They had to learn and understand
how people lived within that land.
Yet in the midst of all things strange,
their inward purpose did not change:
to serve the God of heaven alone,
whether the road was hard or smooth.
Babylon would not determine
the future loyalties within them.
No foreign gods, no power or splendor
would tear their faith from its Defender.
The testing had but just begun;
no battle yet had they truly won.
Yet God already shaped them there
for greater trials they soon would bear.
For soon the truth would be made clear:
who truly served the Lord in fear.
Faithfulness lives not only where
the temple stands and worship fills the air.
The world around them roared aloud,
with countless things that drew the crowd.
Yet much that sparkles in human eyes
is passing dust beneath the skies.
In those first days, young Daniel learned
to trust in God though all had turned.
For genuine faith will still remain
when home and all familiar things are gone.
And so they stood in Babylon,
with Judah distant and withdrawn.
Yet God’s great plan began right there,
still hidden behind every door.
From foreign captives God would raise
His faithful witnesses in that place.
Before great kings they soon would stand
and glorify the Lord’s command.
Thus Babylon became the ground
where God revealed a treasure found—
not gold, not fame, not earthly might,
but faithfulness brought into light.
Whoever trusts through darkest days
will know God’s nearness on the way.
For no strange land beneath the sky
is greater than the Lord Most High.
🌟 Prophetic Reflection
🌍 In the Bible, Babylon often represents a world that seeks to live without God.
🙏 Daniel and his friends had to learn how to remain faithful while surrounded by a completely different culture.
✨ God’s end-time people also live as strangers in a world shaped by different values. The challenge remains the same: not to change the world by becoming more like it, but to remain faithful to God wherever we live.
🌍 For the Most High reigns not only in Jerusalem—He reigns over the whole earth.
